The World Congress of Constitutional Law is the most exciting event on the global constitutional law calendar, held every four years and bringing together constitutional law scholars from around the world. It provides a unique opportunity to discuss the most important issues in constitutional law and for jurists from differing jurisdictions to meet and share ideas. The Congress will be held for the first time in Johannesburg South Africa from 5-9 December 2022.
More information will be shared as the time approaches, but we invite you to save the date of 5-9 December 2022 and join us in Johannesburg for what promises to be a ground-breaking event.
The theme of ‘Constitutional Transformations’ was chosen by the International Association of Constitutional Law (IACL) and invites reflection on a range of topics including an important two-way dynamic: constitutions themselves respond to social change over time through amendment and interpretation; yet, constitutions also play a role in shaping the way in which societies develop.
We hope the theme will invite contributions both from the Global North and Global South, placing developments in a creative tension with one another.
The IACL, University of Johannesburg Faculty of Law and the South African Institute for Advanced Constitutional, Public, Human Rights and International Law (SAIFAC) thus invite academics from across the world to share their expertise and ideas, helping to develop the conversations both about understanding constitutional systems better but also, most importantly, about how to develop and transform constitutional law.
In moving the Constitution beyond the academy and hallways of courts, together with the Congress, we will launch a campaign about ‘the Constitution in Action’: seeking to advance constitutionalism in South Africa, Africa and more globally through highlighting for the broader public the way in which Constitutions can actually change lives and so deepen their commitment to constitutionalism.
Constitutional values, we believe, should also not remain in the books: the manner in which we organize the conference will thus also reflect our commitment to economic development in South Africa as well as environmental sustainability. Your attendance will thus, in itself, make a contribution to South African society.
